

Edna Irene (Dunham) Smith, 96, passed away on February 27, 2017. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 4, 2017, at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 1020-24th St., in West Des Moines with burial at Resthaven Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, at McLaren’s Chapel in West Des Moines.
Edna was born February 10, 1921, in Leon, IA. She was the 10th child born to Walter Monroe Dunham and Cora Belle (Spicer) Dunham. She attended Leon High School, graduating in 1938.
Edna married Wilbert E. “Gus” Smith on April 15, 1939. To this union, two children were born, Gary and Linda. Gus passed away in 1974. Edna worked for twenty years in food service in the West Des Moines School District, serving lunch at both Valley High School and Fairmeadows Elementary. She enjoyed playing cards, dancing, fishing trips with friends, and any type of athletic event. Edna loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Valley Tigers equally. She was active at St. Timothy’s; volunteering at St. Tim’s preschool in its early days and serving as President of Saint Anne’s Guild.
Edna is survived by her son, Gary (Marsha) Smith of West Des Moines; daughter, Linda (Michael) Knight of Urbandale; three grandchildren, Darin (Tina Weber) Deer of West Des Moines, Laura (Brian) Walthart of Iowa City, and Meg (Rob) Gilland of Highlands Ranch, CO; five great-grandchildren, Jonathan (Maggie), Anna, Jackson, Megan, and Zach; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband; and siblings, Alta (Reynolds), Ralph, Fred, George, Clyde, Elzie, Leck, Leo and Wilma (Liggett).
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to her church.
