Jon’s Celebration of Life will be held on January 15th, 2022 at ValAir Ballroom, beginning at 5:00 pm. 5:00 to 7:00 pm will be a more traditional visitation for whose who prefer that format. At 7:00 pm we will start playing music in honor of Jon’s lifelong passion for that topic. Jon truly wanted a celebration - he did not want people to be sad. So please join us ready to honor and remember Jon in the way he wanted.
Jon was born on January 4, 1985, at Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines. He grew up in West Des Moines and loved participating in sports. While he enjoyed playing football through his junior high years, baseball was his greatest talent and passion. Jon’s baseball “career” started in West Des Moines Little League, continued through an AAU Select Tournament Team, and finished when he played starting catcher for the Valley High School baseball team. This team won the State Championship in Jon’s senior and graduating year of 2003. In addition to sports, Jon spent time with a large group of friends. He and his friend, Paul even started a DJ business at the young age of 15.
Much of Jon’s childhood was spent at the family farm where he developed a love for the outdoors, camping, and fishing. Jon’s sister, Karissa was his constant companion. They formed a special bond as friends and siblings, and were very close throughout Jon’s life. After graduating high school, Jon attended Drake University in Des Moines. While at Drake, Jon participated in intramural activities and was a proud member of the Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He maintained strong bonds with his fraternity brothers even after graduation. Jon graduated from Drake in 2008 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a focus on finance and accounting. It was during his time at Drake that Jon also met his best friend and partner of the last fifteen years. After some strong hinting, Jon finally caved, and he and Fallon were married in June 2011.
Jon had an irrepressible love of learning, and of helping people. This combination led him into the insurance industry where he could use his vast knowledge of finance and insurance to help people save money while still getting the protection they needed. Jon was an insurance agent for the last 13 years, owning his own independent agency for the last five. That’s not all he did. Jon was also a certified tax preparer, involved in land development and management projects, and through it all, he kept the DJ business going.
Jon had a generous and loving heart. He loved animals, and somehow let his wife talk him into two dogs and four cats. Jon was unbelievably smart and clever and had a wicked sense of humor. He was very funny and very sarcastic. You could always tell how much Jon cared about someone by how outrageous the things he said about them were Jon’s love of learning lasted his entire life. If there was a subject he was interested in, he took the time to fully educate himself on the topic. Jon loved stand-up comedy and listened to a few podcasts regularly. He loved movies of all types, ranging from movies such as Stepbrothers and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, to movies like The Shawshank Redemption and The Usual Suspects. Jon also had an unashamed enjoyment of romantic comedies. Jon loved music of all types. Tech N9ne was an all-time favorite, right next to Elton John. He carried his love of fishing from childhood all through his life as well. His favorite hobby was hand tying flies and jigs. Jon was truly a one-of-a-kind man. He was a wonderful son and brother (and son-in-law and brother-in-law), and he was a perfect husband. Jon was a partner in every sense of the word. The support he gave to anyone who needed it, whether he knew them well or not, was staggering. All Jon wanted to do was help people. He was an amazing friend to those who called him such. He loved his friends and family. Jon adored his wife and their pets. Hs generosity and desire to help people lasted until the end of his life, as Jon was a very proud organ donor.
