Richard D. Dingman, 84, passed away peacefully Monday, March 31, 2014. A private family service will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, Iowa.
Richard was born January 13, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan, the son of Elsie and Ray Dingman. He graduated from Roosevelt High School in Des Moines, Iowa, where he excelled in swimming competitions and held a state record for several years. Upon graduating, he joined the Navy as an electrician, serving honorably for five years. After leaving the Navy, Richard entered into the apprentice electrician’s program with IBEW Local 347 serving as an active member for over 59 years.
An avid car enthusiast, he enjoyed restoring Model A’s and could “fix” anything. He and his wife Shirley relocated to Rogers, Arkansas in 1991, residing there until three years ago when they returned to Norwalk, Iowa to live with their son and daughter-in-law. At the time of passing they were living at Urbandale Health Care Center.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Larry (Tammy) Dingman of Memphis, Tennessee and Mark (Rebecca) Dingman of Norwalk, Iowa; grandchildren, Melissa, Angela, Michael and Shannon; great- grandchildren, Mackenzie, Madison and Dakota, and Chase and Alexa; and his sister, Janice (Newland) Malmquist of Salt Lake, Utah.
Memorial contributions may be given to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
He will be forever in our hearts.
