Robert “Bobby” Rodriguez passed away in Des Moines on December 29, 2018, after a long, brave fight against cancer. He is survived by his son, Corey Rodriguez (Meg), his mother Margaret Rodriguez, and 5 brothers - Miguel, Raymond, Rahelio, Billy, and Gary. Bobby was also blessed with a large extended family, including numerous nephews and nieces along with the Bejarno/Bejarano family. He was preceded in death by his father, Raymond.
Bobby was born on January 29, 1950, in Valley Junction - where he remained an important member of the community throughout his life. He attended Sacred Heart Catholic School in West Des Moines then went on to graduate from Valley High School in 1968, lettering in Varsity Football as a running back.
After graduation, he joined the Army and served a tour in Vietnam. He was a member of the distinguished 3/5 Black Knight Armored Calvary and was awarded the Bronze Star. He remained lifelong friends with his Black Knight Brothers, coming together over the years at reunions and reinforcing their motto “If you ain’t Cav, you ain’t s***!”
He returned from his tour and started work at Meredith Printing, which later became RR Donnelly. Soon after, he married Trudy Bouma and became a father to Corey. After RR Donnelly closed, he completed a training program at DMACC and then started a new career at Pioneer.
Bobby’s life was full, and every adventure and hobby he tackled brought him more lifelong friends. He spent years playing fast pitch softball, biking and most recently discovered a love for kayaking. His biking days started with Bobby as a charter member of the RAGBRAI team the MeOffs in 1985. Over the years Bobby rode and drove support for his biking family, all the way up until this past summer. There were many other bike rides and memories, all leading to his firm belief that you can never have too many bikes.
Bobby will be remembered for many things because he is unforgettable. He was not only a father to Corey; he was a father to so many he came across in life. His laughter and big heart would draw you in, but it was his kindness, guidance, and friendship that truly left his mark. From his days on the gridiron to his time as a soldier in Vietnam, to his battle with cancer, Bobby showed courage and dignity. And as sad and empty as we feel, we can take solace knowing he is now reunited with those who have gone before, especially his Dad.
Funeral services will be 11 am Friday, January 4 at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel in West Des Moines. Burial with military honors will follow at 2 pm at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.
