January 13, 1924 - October 8, 2025
Ruth Melinda McNerney (née Atwell) passed away peacefully on October 8, 2025, at the age of 101. She was the beloved mother of 11, grandmother of 20, great-grandmother of 21, and great-great-grandmother of 4. Her loss is deeply felt — she was not only a devoted mother and grandmother, but a best friend and unwavering supporter to many.
Born on a farm in Grove City, PA, Ruth was the youngest of seven, raised by her widowed mother after her father's passing when she was just two. Life on the farm was humble — she walked or rode a horse-drawn carriage to a one-room schoolhouse and helped with chores, but found joy in climbing trees and observing the world around her.
After earning her RN license, she took a train west to begin her nursing career in Denver, eventually moving to Des Moines to become head nurse of a nursery ward — her dream job. It was there she met and married her husband of 40 years, Dr. Joseph R. McNerney.
As a mother, Ruth’s kindness, strength, and wisdom were constants. She believed deeply in the potential for people to grow and change, always choosing hope over despair. She had a gift for creativity — turning flour and water into play dough, crafting hats and props from newspaper, and finding magic in everyday moments. Her backyard was often filled with flowers, laughter, and bubbles — a place where conversations blossomed and children played.
Ruth was deeply committed to her community, dedicating her energy to creating opportunities for others. She served on numerous boards, but was most proud of her work with the Valley Junction Neighborhood Association and the founding of the West Des Moines Greater Opportunity Center and the Eddie Davis Community Center. These spaces were created to uplift families and provide essential support and resources.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Joseph R. McNerney; sons Richard and Edwin McNerney; sons-in-law Jack Byrd and Mike Curran; daughter-in-law Judy McNerney; grandson Timothy McNerney; her parents; and all of her siblings.
She is lovingly remembered by her children: Mary (Jack) Byrd, Dr. Joseph P. (Jane) McNerney, David McNerney, Dr. Robert (Denise) McNerney, Beth (Brad) Thayer, Daniel (Lisa) McNerney, Sarah McNerney, Bridget McNerney, and Angela (Mike Magner) McNerney; as well as by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews from the Atwell, McNerney, and Millen families.
The family will host a visitation at McLarens Resthaven Chapel on Saturday October 18th, at 11am with funeral and internment to follow.
A memorial reception will be held at 5pm at the Eddie Davis Community Center.
Memorial donations may be made in Ruth’s name to the Eddie Davis Community Center.
