Ruth T Shirk

Ruth T. Shirk, 98, passed away peacefully April 3, 2021. A private memorial graveside service will be held later at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Ruth was born May 18, 1922 in Des Moines to Audra (Bowers) and Earl Towers. She lived in Marion,Des Moines, Norwalk, and finally, at The Lodge of Ashworth in West Des Moines with her husband Jerry, celebrating 75 years of marriage before his death in 2016. A long-time duplicate bridge player, Ruth loved activities at the Lodge such as bridge, mahjong, pool, and singing in the Lodge chorus. Ruth's 2nd career was her dedication to nursing, working both in hospital emergency rooms as well as in the office of Drs. Jim Bell and Paul Holzworth. Her first career was caring for her family, including grandchildren and great-grandchildren, a blessing in her life.
Ruth is survived by her loving family including sons Darrell (Dianne) Shirk of Gravois Mills, MO, Ron (Karen) Shirk of Salisbury , NC (formerly of Des Moines), Larry (Linda) Shirk of rural Norwalk, IA, and daughter Lori Shirk of Indianola, IA; eight grandchildren, Brett (Ruth) Shirk of Springfield, MO, Darci (Dan) Frahm of Davidson, NC, Sam (Erica) Shirk of Valdez, AK, Megan (Justin) Fisk of Washington D.C., Sarah Roe of Libertyville, IL, Jeremiah (Mary) Shirk of Wheaton, IL, Kate (John) Schofield of Salisbury, NC (formerly of Des Moines), Caitlyn (Abraham) Violett of Kansas City, MO.
Ruth is survived by 20 great-grandchildren, Gabriel, Eliana, and Sofia Frahm; Blake,Grant, Ann, McAllister, and Bear Schofield; River Iannaccone; Piers Shirk; Matthew, Alex, Brady, and Mason Roe; Thomas and Ethan Smith; Noah and Mary Kennedy Shirk; Emma and Ellen Violett.
Ruth was preceded in death by her loving husband Jerry and infant son Gerald Paul Shirk.

Ruth was the most compassionate person at The Bridge House. She was so proud that her son was a physician and that my husband and I happened to take our family to him for care. Her eyes always twinkled when she spoke about her husband Jerry.

Ruth, My dear sweet forever friend For 53 yrs and my great nurse co hart my heart is saddened with your passing , your work on earth well done and you received your Angel wings! Saddened but yet happy for you as you missed your loving husband Jerry so much I can see you two smiling and hugging each other so tight at heavens gate. You loved your family with all your heart and soul and took beautiful card of your Lori , and your children will continue to take loving care of her. You and I were and are best friends forever we shared laughter tears triumphs and fears You were my son Jeffs God mother and the granny to Julie and Steve my whole family knew and loved you -mention your name and they would say we love her! I’m so glad we kept in close touch after I moved in 1977 our friendship was golden never tarnished by anything. We would share stories and events about family friends working in the ER just everything . Ruth you were so kind caring wise loving strong funny stubborn when necessary and a true Angel on earth I hear your voice and your laughter my heart swells with love and pride to have had you my treasured friend in my life to teach me lessons in life by watching you in action and words of wisdom and courage and love. Ruth was truly one of my favorite nurses ever. She took great care of her patients as well as being friends with all her coworkers. She was truly a credit to her profession. She was a blessing in my life.
