Tamara Ann Hubler died peacefully, surrounded by beloved family, on April 17, 2026 at Edgewater in West Des Moines. Friends and family are invited to a graveside service at 11 a.m. Friday, May 1, 2026 at Resthaven Cemetery. A reception will follow at Edgewater, 9225 Cascade Ave., West Des Moines 50266.
Tamara was born March 23, 1940 in West Des Moines, to William and Wilma Davis. She grew up on the Davis family farm with her sisters Ellen and Linda, riding horses, milking cows, driving a tractor, and winning prizes in 4-H. She attended Pearce School, Valley High School, and Parsons College, majoring in home economics. Tam met David Hubler at Parsons and they married on March 10, 1962. After several years of teaching junior high home-economics, she was a full-time mother and homemaker to Angela and Mark, her favorite child. She taught VBS, served both as a Girl Scout and Cub Scout leader, and volunteered at Carrie Busey Elementary School. Tamara nurtured in her children and grandchildren a love of art, reading, birding, cats, and travel. She sang in the church choir and served on countless church boards and committees throughout her life. She was a gifted gardener and she beautified the grounds of every home in which she lived and at Massanetta Springs Conference Center in Harrisonburg, VA. She blessed many with her plant starts and beautiful bouquets, one of which is the subject of a pastel by artist Louise Woodroofe, whom she met when Dave was working at the University of Illinois.
She returned to the workforce in 1985 as a buyer at Peebles Department Store in Bowie, MD, a teller and loan officer at Citizens National Bank in Bowie, and at Golden One Credit Union in Chico, CA. When Dave became Executive Director of Massanetta Springs Conference Center, she volunteered with Elderhostel and cared for the resident swans, Bonnie and Clyde. Dave was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2001 and Tam tenderly cared for him during radiation, chemotherapy, and a stem-cell transplant. After Tam was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2012, Dave lovingly cared for her and they traveled the world until his death in 2016. Her suffering is over and they are now reunited.
She is survived by children Angela (Tim) and Mark (Jillian); grandchildren Neil, Jack (a.k.a. Tako Chikte), Mallory, Keeleigh and Briana; sisters Ellen (Paul) and Linda; nieces and nephews Rick, Todd, Tanya, Heather, Jill, Michael and Kurt; and brother-in-law Rob (Jo).
Memorial gifts may be given to the Cure Alzheimer’s Fund, DMARC (Des Moines Area Religious Council), or to the Tamara and David Hubler Charitable Fund at the Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines.
