Twila was born November 30, 1923, in Presho, South Dakota. She was one of nine children born to Theodore and Marie Hanson. Growing up in the Depression Years influenced her greatly as she learned at an early age how to be self-sufficient and the value of hard work.
Twila married Raymond Johnson in 1946. She was a stay at home mom as the children were raised. Twila worked part-time at various jobs. She moved to Colorado in 1974 and lived in Colorado Springs and the Denver metro area. She retired from Cahner’s Publishing in 1986 and spent her retirement gardening and traveling with her second husband, Glenn Walkup. She moved back to Des Moines in 2003 and settled in Norwalk, Iowa.
Twila was preceded in death by husbands Raymond and Glenn, daughter Vikki, sisters Lucille, Dorothy, Geneva, Theodora, and brothers Ted, Bob, and Doug.
Twila is survived by one sister, Gloria Harris, daughter Carol (Jim) Crosby, and son Ted (Janis) Johnson. She is also survived by six grandchildren and numerous great and great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 1 pm, Monday, January 13, 2020, at Glendale Cemetery in the Veterans section in Des Moines, Iowa.
