It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Wallace R. Hawxby, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, who passed away on April 24, 2023 at Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa, at the age of 86.
Wally was born December 2, 1936, to Maxine (Bright) and Wallace R. Hawxby, Sr. On June 24, 1956, Wally married Rea Jean Johnson and together they had five children: John, Alecia, Danny, Angela, and Leah. He was a devoted husband to Rea and they raised their children in Des Moines, Iowa, where they enjoyed spending time together as a family. Their door was always open to friends and kids in the neighborhood, and he never let anyone leave the house hungry.
Wally worked as a butcher and meat manager at Dahl’s Foods for more than 30 years where he made countless connections within the community that he treasured. He was a hard worker who always inspired his family and colleagues to be their best. In his free time, he was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Shriners International, Izaak Walton League of America, and was active in the Iowa State Pigeon Association and the Iowa Flying Roller Club. He enjoyed raising and showing pigeons across the midwest, as well as gardening in his expansive backyard, and sharing his knowledge with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Wally’s passing is a profound loss to all who knew him. He will be remembered for his wit and wisdom, and his unwavering dedication to his family. He leaves behind a legacy of knowledge and kindness that will live on through his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
