Frederick D. Bates, age 81, of Dennis Port, formerly of Stoughton, died peacefully at his home, surrounded by family on September 24, 2020 after a period of failing health. He was the devoted husband of Mary (Doyle) Bates for 57 years. He honorably served in the US Navy aboard the first guided missile cruiser, the USS Boston. When he returned from duty, he married Mary in 1963.

Fred was a talented carpenter and perfectionist. He created great beauty in all his work. From his time in the Carpenter’s Union through owning his own business he made many life-long friends. He loved to travel, play golf and was an avid reader and history buff. Fred was a faithful and devout Catholic and communicant of St. James Church in Stoughton and Holy Trinity Church in West Harwich. He will be remembered for his love of family, story-telling, strong determination, and his generosity.

He treasured his family and friends and leaves behind his daughter Dottie Bates Fulginiti and her husband Gerry of Easton, his sons Danny and his wife Debby of Foxboro, Stephen and his wife Lori of Stoughton, Jimmy and his wife Caryn of Mystic CT, his grandchildren Richard, Danielle, Joe, Tyler, Devin, Taryn, Jarrod, Victoria, Sydney and Morgan and his great-grandchildren Cameron, Cali Rose and Cason. He is survived by his sister Janet Bates Kennedy and Frances and Paul Clark, Thomas O’Connor, Kenneth and Rose Hammond and many nieces and nephews in the US and Canada.

The most favorite memory is the lifetime of friendship and love
we share. The first memory is when David was born 43 years ago when Dotty Danny Stephen and Jimmy took turns as his babysitters and you had a high chair in your kitchen all those years to include David to your Family Saturday night dinners.
My second favorite memory are summers at the pool with George and all the fancy diving shows and fun times he created for everyone over so many years.
Personally I remember all my chats with both Fred and you in the new family room that we shared for a lifetime as friends.
I cherish that our friendship has continued with all of us moving
to the cape and staying connected
All my love
Arlene

God now has another one of special Harwich Hackers ............. for 25 or so years, around this time in September, 27-28 of us would gather at Hirtle/Heavey Harwich home for Wednesday - Monday gathering. Great food, lousy golf, wild card games, TV football, long 19th hole celebration, jokes/razzing/conversation and great food/drinks ........... and Fred was always key ingredient. Always smiling and upbeat. All of us looked forward being with each other spending a special extended stay at our annual gatherings. Fred in a better place now and Hacker Heaven Reunion has a new member. His family was lucky to have Fred for 81 years and so were The Hackers. God Speed Fred!
