 I was shocked to learn of Jim’s passing.  I will always remember you and Jim as the loveliest and most loving couple in any room.  My last memory of you both was when you hosted the beautiful gala at the Art Institute.  When you walked in the room, you looked like the “first couple”!

Dear Laurie, I was stunned and saddened by the news of Jim’s death.  Although I didn’t see you two often, I cherished my friendship, one that with Jim went back to the 1970s at the Tavern Club.  

I remember Jim giving me a ride home many years ago from downtown to Old Town and thinking, “This is out of his way,” but that is the kind of man he was—a kind man.

I keep a photo of you, Jim and me with Charlotte York (it must have been her engagement party) in my Chicago apartment.  It always brings a smile to my face, now mixed with tears, as I send love and sympathy to you.
