

age 90, of West Palm Beach, FL, passed away August 12, 2016 with her family by her side. She was born April 18, 1926, the second of four daughters to Bahamian immigrant parents, the late Stanley and Julia Edgecombe. Myrtis was the devoted wife of Dr. Gerald C. Burke for 62 years and the loving mother of five children, Gerunda, Michael, Patricia, Marcus and Tanya. After graduating from Industrial High School with honors, Myrtis earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1948 with a major in English and minor in history from the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical (A&T) University in Greensboro, NC, where she was on the Dean’s list every quarter and graduated with honors. She also earned a certificate in Elementary Education from Florida A&M University in 1962 and a Master of Science in Curriculum & Instruction from Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 1969. Myrtis was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church for over 60 years. She committed her life to Christ and was confirmed under the leadership of Fr. Lambert Sands on October 27, 1957. At St. Patrick’s, she was always committed to Christian Service and exemplified the Christian fruitage of love, kindness, goodness, patience, and mildness.
