This week I will be presenting the Richard Weinstein Conservation Partner Award to Stella and M.C.Davis.  The award, given by The Nature Conservancy, will honor both Dick and the Davis' for their amazing contributions to protecting Florida.  MC and Stella Davis have personally purchased and restored over 56,000 acres of natural lands in Walton County. They are restoring these lands to the historic longleaf pine/wiregrass ecosystem. Additionally, they created the E.O. Wilson Biophilia Center to educate the next generations of conservationists.  I believe Dick would be proud of their actions and would support their selection for this prestigious award.  

There are few days that pass that Dick's legacy to FL is not appreciated. Thank you.

He was my grandfather and I still miss him very much

I learned of Dick's passing today, August 14, 2014. He was my very good lifetime friend dating back to 1954 or earlier. He and I were often rival antagonists in the courtroom but fast friends neverthe less.  He was an exceptional lawyer and made his mark in Norwalk and Palm Beach.  I will miss him. Although I had only known Dick for  the past two years, each time I saw him he had wonderful stories of your latest accomplishments.  He was grateful for your frequent visits and your commitment to his well being.  Dick felt he was blessed by his beautiful family and his important work. He lived a full life in every sense.

I had several dealings with Dick and it was plain to me that he was a exceptional person. He made a difference to this world and left it a better place.

Father of my college sweetheart, Dick Weinstein was larger than life to me and his example staightened my back and inspired me to become an attorney. Little wonder my practice specialty is land use and planning, a sub specialty to real estate practice, both areas in which he was expert, and no doubt drew upon in his work with The Nature Conservancy. It was always my wish as a young lawyer to carry the briefcases of a guy like him. I am saddened by his passing, and wish well for his children and grandchildren.

Dick Weinstein was a great man. He will be missed by all who knew him.

I served as Florida State Director and, later, Southern Regional Director of The Nature Conservancy when Dick was a member or the Florida Board. It was for me an honor to know Dick and to work with him.  He was a man of exceptional judgment, the highest ethical standards, great warmth and integrity.  His good sense and wise counsel were of great help to me in dealing with the challenging world of conservation in Florida and beyond.  Like so many others, I could always count on Dick in times of need and crisis.  

Beyond his work at TNC, I always admired his love of family and his inspiring approach to life.  We will all miss him.  I hope you can take comfort in knowing what a great man Dick Weinstein was and how much he meant to so many people.  Thank you for sharing him with us.  You have my deep sympathy.  All the best in the years to come.

I was an employee of The Nature Conservancy for 36 years and knew Dick quite well. He was always gracious, caring and humble. We became good friends and was my go too Board member when I want advice on matters related to TNC. God bless!!

I just heard about Dick's passing and am greatly grieved by it. My wife, Diane, and I join what I am sure are a host of others in extending our condolences to his much-beloved family.  Dick and I were friends for the many years during which I was The Nature Conservancy's chief scientist and Dick was on the national board. We got to know each other very well and I can truly say that he was a man of great wisdom, affability, and judgment and one of the most useful board members that the Conservancy ever had.  Here's a remembrance:  In the early 1970s, when the Conservancy was still just a fledgling organization -- not at all the world's largest and perhaps most consequential conservation organization that Dick was instrumental in helping it become -- the necessity arose to redraw the bylaws.  There were a number of important issues, among them the rectification of some oversights in election procedures that laid the organization open to potentially destabilizing disruptions. Dick, as a prominent lawyer and expert in such matters, was the primary author, and he chaired the annual meeting session where the matter was to be voted on.  The discussion quickly got out of hand, and after some particularly specious and vituperative remarks from one of the usual cranks threatened to derail things, Dick, unflappable as always, calmly replied, "My drafting is often criticized."  He said it in such a droll way that it made everybody laugh, diffusing all the tension in the room.  The question was soon called and the new bylaws were approved almost unanimously.  This is the sort of thing for which Dick was famous and for which he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Dick Weinstein was a truly great individual and the consummate conservationist. At Board meetings during my early career at The Nature Conservancy, Dick always went out of his way to make me feel comfortable, welcome and my work appreciated. I just saw Dick (and one of his daughters and two of his grandchildren) at a Nature Conservancy event at the Williamson Ranch in Okeechobee County in late March and he looked great and was as congenial and gracious as ever. I am sure that none of us will ever forget the many extremely important contributions Dick made to Florida conservation and the very kind and generous person that he was throughout his life. He will be missed but certainly never forgotten.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of such a beautiful and great man--he truly was a major part of my childhood.  He will be missed, but his legend will live on forever...

Dick Weinstein was a man of exceptional accomplishment in the field of natural resource conservation. Many of the natural areas in Southeast Florida and beyond which are now protected for all time would not have been preserved without his important work. He was a wonderful gentleman and will be missed by all who worked with him to protect natural Florida.
