Tonita was born and raised in Palm Beach County and attended Palm Beach High School. She met the love of her life, Bill Smyth, while he was in the U.S. Air Force and stationed at Palm Beach Air Force Base (Morrison Field) in West Palm Beach. They married in 1957 and moved to several places before Bill retired after 21 years in the Air Force in 1973 and they returned to Palm Beach County. Tonita shared a wonderful life with Bill over 63 years of marriage until his passing in 2021. They raised 3 children together and established Smyth Air Conditioning in 1987. Tonita was so proud that her children joined the business and are still operating it today. She was an avid tennis player and enjoyed playing team tennis at South Olive and Howard Park where she made many lifelong friends. In her later years she was thrilled to introduce her grandchildren to the sport, teaching and playing with them over the summertime. Tonita was a feisty Florida native like her mother and loved to share stories of old Florida and reminisce about friends, family and acquaintances. Known as Grandmommy to her grandchildren and Teta to her nephews and nieces Tonita was a caring wife, grandmother and friend, yet known to be stern in her convictions and never afraid to speak her mind. She was also known to love animals, especially the many cats she cared for over the years, attending to them and treating them like they were her children, always making sure they were well fed, healthy and warm.
