Barbara Maureen Bell

May 13, 1949 – August 9, 2026

Barb passed away peacefully in the quiet company of her brother Doug and his wife Karen, after a brief but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born in Vancouver, she was the beloved daughter of Audrey “Patricia” and Ian Bell. Barb grew up in Vancouver and graduated from Prince of Wales High School in 1967. She went on to the University of British Columbia, obtaining her Bachelor of Commerce degree in 1972. Reflecting her natural leadership, she proudly served as the President of the UBC Commerce Undergraduate Society in her graduating year.

After graduation, Barb followed in the footsteps of her grandfather, Robert Bell, and her father, Ian Bell, pursuing her Chartered Accountant designation. She successfully obtained her CA through her articles at Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co.

Barb loved new challenges, which shaped a rich and diverse career path. She was naturally organized, practical, and deeply compassionate—qualities that she learned from her father and carried throughout her life. Her professional journey spanned several notable organizations. She served as Controller and Director at Odlum Brown, Director of the Naramata Centre (United Church Camp), and Executive Director of the REACH Community Health Clinic in Vancouver, before eventually establishing her own successful accounting practice.

Along the way, she generously dedicated her spare time to numerous causes close to her heart. She was a valuable member of the Executive at the Vancouver Hospice Society (HOB Thrift Shop) and lent her expertise to the boards of LEAF (Women's Legal Education and Action Fund) and the Elizabeth Bagshaw Clinic, alongside many other community organizations.

Barb was also active and loved being part of her Fitness Table group. Though she famously loved to grumble during the workouts, she was incredibly dedicated and always worked hard.

Known for her humble and understanding manner, Barb provided wisdom and humour to every situation. She was deeply respected and loved by those who worked and trained with her. Most importantly, Barb was a fiercely loyal friend and a genuinely kind soul.

The family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the dedicated and caring doctors and nurses on Unit 10C at Vancouver General Hospital (VGH) for their exceptional comfort and support during Barb's final days.

Barb is survived by her brothers David, Bruce, and Doug, alongside her beloved cats, Sami and Jasmine. She also leaves behind a large, loving family of 5 nieces, 4 nephews, 9 grandnieces, and 5 grandnephews.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Barbara on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club (RVYC), 3811 Point Grey Road, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM.
