Brendan Hunt was born at 7:30 am in the morning of October 20, 1993 at Lions Gate Hospital, North Vancouver to elated parents Trish and Steve Hunt. He was followed by the birth of his brother Evan Hunt in 1997. His infant and pre-school years were spent joyfully in Tiddley Cove, Caulfeild and Lighthouse Park, near the Hunt Family's first home on Water Lane in West Vancouver.
The family then moved to another childhood paradise - Cranley Drive, Eagle Harbour, West Vancouver. Brendan and Evan had ten idyllic years there with many close friendships developed, carefree days of play, roaming the neighborhood and beach on bikes/scooters. Brendan attended Eagle Harbour and Gleneagles Elementary Schools (1999—2006). He graduated from Grade 7 at Gleneagles on a high note, excelling in and enjoying all facets of his life.
The family moved to Phoenix, Arizona for Steve's work in 2006. Although a major transition, Brendan and Evan settled in to their neighborhood and schools, developing great and enduring friendships. The boys had many of their close friends visit from BC which were highlights. The house and pool seemed continuously filled with kids and laughter. Brendan attended Alta Deña Middle School and Desert Vista High school, actively participating in marching bands, badminton, soccer and cross country running teams.
The family moved back to West Vancouver in 2009. Brendan attended Rockridge Secondary in West Vancouver, participating in the cross country team, and where he graduated in 2011. He attended Capilano University for a term. He obtained several industrial first aid, information systems and apprentice credentials. Over the past 10 years Brendan worked in a variety of roles as a glazier, home security technician, and in office/database management and accounting in Victoria, Vancouver, Alberta and Saskatchewan.
Brendan was an energetic, outgoing and vibrant person. We soon observed early on that he was born to run. He developed ADHD as a child and Type 1 juvenile diabetes as young teenager. In the face of these challenges he pursued many activities and hobbies that he enjoyed and excelled at including: Cross country running, soccer, badminton, and track and field--competing at championship levels in B.C. and the U.S.; member of the West Vancouver Track and Field Club; accomplished saxophone player in school bands and in the West Vancouver Youth Band. He was an avid hiker and skier, and participated in Scouts--Venturers going on some long, epic winter and summer hikes in remote BC locations. He was a loyal, affectionate friend and enjoyed several close friendships, relationships in person and online networking during his short life. He loved being part of the family reunions that we had over the years with his many cousins, aunts and uncles. Grandma Marlene Hunt (RIP) was a continuous, loving presence in Brendan's life, including teaching he and Evan to be quite capable badminton players, amongst many great activities and trips they did together.
Brendan struggled with mental health issues. We commend his courage, commitment and great effort to try and overcome these challenges during what became a very difficult journey in the latter part of his life. Our hearts were broken when we lost Brendan--he passed away suddenly in his suite in Burnaby on Feb 24, 2022 from diabetes complications. He was 28 years young.
Brendan leaves behind family and friends who loved him dearly and unconditionally. His parents – Steve and Trish Hunt; his younger brother – Evan Hunt; Aunts and Uncles – Susan and Paul Molholm, Dee MacCarthy and Jeff Derbyshire, Gerry and Earl Mowatt, Marian and Ken Gorsline; and all their families/cousins—Ashley Molholm and Taylor Haun and daughter Ellie; Heather and Grant Thorburn—son, daughter Gavin and Hadley; Shawn Ward, Ashanty Metzger and daughter Stella Dee; Melanie and Anthony Comazetto and daughter Amasra; Kevin Gorsline, Carly Daoust and son, daughter – Dawson and Briar; Jennifer Gorsline and daughter Marlo; Great Auntie Dorothy Haegert and Family; and several family members in Australia and England.
Although our grief and sadness losing Brendan is profound, we have greatly appreciated the caring support of our family and friends, and the many donations made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We were always hopeful that Brendan would benefit from a cure in his life time. Now other children, youth and families will hopefully benefit in the not too distant future. To honour Brendan further, an athletic scholarship will be established at Rockridge Secondary School to be awarded annually to a student who excels in cross country running/track and field.
We will find strength in cherishing the wonderful times and pure joy that Brendan gave us over 28 years.
Forever young and always in our hearts you will be Brendan. We love you and miss you dear son and brother.
Trish, Steve and Evan Hunt
