It is with heavy hearts that we tell you about the loss of Bruce – beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend. He is survived by Mary (Lu) his wife of 60 years, by his daughters Elisabeth and Rosemary and their families which include delightful grandchildren Chloe, Ari, Lucille and Kaiden.
Bruce and Mary migrated from Ontario to British Columbia in 1965. Enthralled with West Coast living, they settled in West Vancouver in a charming Tudor cottage across the road from the ocean where they raised their two daughters. Bruce and Mary enjoyed West Van life until moving to Vancouver’s West End upon retirement in 2004.
After coming to BC Bruce attended the UBC School of Social Work. Upon graduation he embarked on a long and illustrious career as a psychiatric social worker, practising in many venues including the Children’s Aid Society, Family Services, Children’s Hospital and Lions Gate Hospital. He loved music (Symphony/Opera/Leonard Cohen). Also theatre along with good food and pretty well any wine.
The best times were with friends and family, especially annual summer holidays at the cottage (now cottages) on Savary Island; this has been a tradition since 1982. Many friendships forged and continuing; the third generation now bonding to this wonderful place.
New places and new experiences were also a passion; Bruce and Mary travelled the world, favourite destinations being Southeast Asia, Africa and India. Annual trips to Mexico were always fun.
Health issues and increasing frailty led to hospital in mid-September followed by a brief period in a care home, culminating in a peaceful death at Vancouver General Hospital on December 18th with his wife by his side.
Sorely missed, Bruce will remain in our hearts.
He had fun.
