Don was predeceased by his parents Wallace and Laura Hay, his sisters Sylvia, Doreen and Barbara, and the mother of his children, Eileen Millar. He is survived by his sister Joan; nieces and nephews Sharon, David, Scott, Stephen and Gayle; his 3 children Donald (Joanne), David (Nancy) and Deirdre (Robin); and his 7 grandchildren, Spencer (Danielle), Emily, Dylan, Tobin, Mimi, Isabella, and Julia.
Don was born and raised in Ontario and moved to Calgary, Alberta in his late twenties. In Alberta he had an active career as production manager in manufacturing and as an Accountant, and this is where he raised his 3 children. He moved to Vancouver in 2013 to be closer to his family, and spent his last few years enjoying the comforts of the Westerleigh Retirement Residence in West Vancouver.
Don endured his share of adversity, but was defined in large measure by a "prairie" toughness. His favorite things in life included playing the game of golf (in his later years he virtually lived at the Shawnee golf club in Calgary where he won the Senior's Championship), reading a good book, and walking many miles a day anywhere his path took him. He was extremely proud of his children and grandchildren and loved to share in their many adventures and accomplishments, joining them on their travels when he could. Don had an inquisitive mind and a kind heart and was a constant source of laughter and joy for his family.
Don was much loved and will be greatly missed and remembered by all those whose lives he touched.
A private cremation will take place and Don’s family will celebrate his life with a round of golf at Gleneagles, West Vancouver on Saturday October 10th, 2015. In lieu of flowers, donations to the SPCA are welcome.
