George Pappas

Februrary 3, 1930 – July 17, 2026

George Pappas beloved Husband, Father, Papou, Brother and Friend. Born George Papakonstantinou in the small village, Kaparelli, Thebes, Greece to Spiro & Georgia Papakonstantinou.

George's adventure to Canada began at age 7. His journey was one marked by strength and curiosity.

Leaving his village by donkey to the Port in Athens, he said good-bye to his beloved mother (his father passed away when he was 6) who knew his life would be improved by being adopted by his Uncle in Vancouver, B.C. He boarded a boat alone (Just the clothing on his back, no money and no grasp of the English Language) which travelled to many ports in Europe with it's final destination in Montreal. From there, a train then brought him across Canada where his adoptive parents Harry (Aristides) and Anna Pappas were waiting for him.

George did his schooling in Vancouver, graduating from Magee Secondary School, and then attended the University Of British Columbia where he graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce degree. He started his working career in the Insurance Business, and moved on to being a highly respected Investment Advisor where he worked until his retirement in 1997.

George had a strong passion for Golf. He began his golf journey as a Caddy at Marine Drive Golf Club at age 13 (1943), he then joined as a Junior member for $1.00/Month. Finally, in 1967, he became a full-time member and later earned a life time membership. A passionate golfer, he continued playing the game he loved until the age of 91, when he played his final round.

He also found a great joy in woodworking, crafting beautiful pieces that will be treasured for years to come. Fishing was another lifelong passion, and his annual fishing trips were a beloved tradition.

George was predeceased by the love of his life Maria in April 1997. Together, they shared 37 years of wonderful marriage. He was also predeceased by both sets of his parents, Spiro & Georgia Papakonstantinou (Greece), Harry (Aristides) & Anna Pappas (Vancouver), along with brother Vasili (Sofoula), Katherine (John), Kosta (Katina), John (Katina).

From the age of 7 until his passing at 96 in Canada, George lived an extraordinary life filled with adventure, love, and purpose, with his greatest joy being his family. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Paul and Danae (Greg), as well as his cherished grandchildren Celeste and Bo. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all whose lives he touched. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral Service to honor George will be held Friday July 24, 2026 @ 11:00am at St. George's Greek Orthodox Cathedral, 4500 Arbutus Street, Vancouver, B.C.
