Michiel Adrianne Roell Q.C., passed away suddenly, at home on Jan 23, 2019 with his beloved wife at his side. It was evident to all that Michiel adored his wife, Judith (Jordan) and was blessed by wonderful relationships with family, friends and neighbours. Michiel was born in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia on May 31, 1936. Michiel’s parents, Adrianne Roell, a Dutch Citizen and Kathleen (MacDonald) Roell, from Cobourg, Ontario, were living on a rubber plantation in Northern Sumatra, Indonesia when World War II broke out. The experience of spending four years in a Japanese Internment Camp had a profound effect on Michiel. He remained extremely close and utterly devoted to his “Mama” until her death in 2008.
After returning to Canada in 1946 with his family, the first Canadian civilians to be repatriated, he attended Lakefield College School and then completed his Law Degree at The University of Western Ontario. Eventually, Michiel headed West and settled in Vancouver, which for him was a “Utopia” with its lush forests, pristine ocean, and amazing wildlife. Michiel was a passionate and deeply knowledgeable student of History, with particular emphasis on World War II. In addition, he also cultivated a deep interest and love of music with a focus on the classical.
Michiel was a charismatic and quirky intellectual, was a storyteller with a dry sparkling sense of humour, who regaled all with his wit and charm. Michiel was a man of simple pleasures and was happiest at home with Judith and his dogs, Talullah and Max, curled up beside him. Michiel will be greatly missed!
A memorial will take place on April 6th, 2019 at St. Francis-in-the-Wood, 4773 Piccadilly Road South, West Vancouver, B.C. at 11:00am.
In lieu of flower, please donate to the BC SPCA or the Children’s Hearing and Speech of B.C.
