May 25, 1925 – July 30, 2018
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Oscar Huber (Opa) at 93 years of age. Oscar passed away peacefully at Lions Gate Hospital on July 30, 2018. Survived by his children, Frank (Jo-ann) and Evelyn (John); his grandchildren, Christina, Julie, Brittany, Kelly and Hanna; as well as his sister Berta in Germany; nieces Monika (Otmar), Sabine, Gaby (Hubert) and nephew Erich; and his beloved cats Belle and Blackie. He was predeceased by his brothers Anton and Hubert.
Oscar lived a very full life, filled with adventure and exploration. He grew up in Bavaria, Germany. At 17 he was forced into the German army and fought in France during WWII, where he was captured. As a prisoner of war he was sent to camps in England and the USA. After being released, he returned to Germany and worked as a saddler and in hotels to save up money to start a new life in Canada. His first experiences in Canada involved working in the oil fields of Alberta and in the forests of Vancouver Island. After settling down in Vancouver he married Anneliese Lange (predeceased) and opened a coffee shop for hikers at the foot of the old Grouse Mountain chairlift, called the “Bavarian Alm.” After selling the Alm, Oscar settled into his long career in the flooring industry.
Oscar had a passion for travelling and adventuring all over the world. Having travelled across six continents, he was most intrigued by the Tibet and Himalayan region. He first travelled to Tibet when it had just been opened to foreigners and was fascinated by the Potala Palace. He also loved returning to the Alps region, where he was born, and thoroughly enjoyed skiing the mountains there.
When he wasn’t out seeing the world, he was at home enjoying his beautiful rock garden full of his favourite flowers, Enzian and Edelweiss. When the weather in Vancouver wasn’t conducive to gardening, he could be found inside reading books from his extensive collection and enjoying time with his beloved kitties.
He cherished his family, in particular his five granddaughters and was a very devoted grandfather. He will be remembered by his granddaughters for his sense of humour, his kind heart and his caring nature. His girls will miss hearing his stories, having Sunday coffees with him and their holiday traditions including Christmas Eve celebrations and Easter egg hunts. They thank Opa most for passing on his sense of adventure and his sweet tooth.
Oscar will be greatly missed by his family and friends, but they take comfort knowing that he will continue his adventures hiking in the mountains and drinking his favourite beer “Tsingtao”.
