Rose Marie Greenwood

April 1, 1935 - May 31, 2026

The world has lost the kindest, sweetest soul. Rose Marie Greenwood was born in Hamilton, Ontario to Stanley and Sophia Cheberinoff, where she grew up along with her younger brother, Stan. In 1960, Rose met her future husband Harry at a book reading, and together they became active in many social, civil and political circles. The two married in 1964, beginning an equal partnership in which Rose supported Harry wholeheartedly in ventures he pursued, and inspired him to get involved in many of her own. Rose was ahead of her time on every level, always curious, and interested in supporting causes such as world federalism, workers' rights and early childhood education, among others. She was an activist her whole life, from her involvement with the Canadian Peace Research Institute to developing programs that promoted expressionism and individualism in children.

Rose was a voracious reader with a sharp, discerning mind. She was drawn to writers with bold ideas — among her favourites were Kurt Vonnegut and Gore Vidal - and enjoyed sharing her love of books and ideas with others. She was always quick to combine humour in both daily conversations and her overall outlook on life. Rose never had a bad word to say about anyone. She encouraged those she loved to try new things and to think for themselves, just as she always had. In the early 90s, Rose and Harry moved from Hamilton to the Garibaldi Highlands, and later to West Vancouver, where Rose continued to offer warmth, generosity and gentleness to all who knew her. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and one of the kindest people to have walked through this world.

Rose is survived by her husband Harry and daughter Jill, and leaves behind a legacy of empathy, compassion, and an intrinsic belief in the dignity of every person. She will be deeply missed and long remembered.
