Dixie loved to travel and has been many places with family and friends. She went to Ireland with BJ to visit some of the teens she met while in the ULSTER Project. She went with Cindy to Paris to visit Helene who had been here with David and Nicholas when they were young at Dennis’s house. She has gone on cruises with Terri and also with her sisters. She has been to Vegas with BJ and Debbie. She went to Reno with Vickie and Terri. She spent many summer vacations in Arkansas with Susie’s family. She went on several RV trips with Vernon. She’s also spent many weeks enjoying Vernon’s camp at Toledo Bend.
She enjoyed game day with Pat, Ellen, Vickie, and Susie every week. She loved going to the Shreveport Mudbugs hockey games with Cindy and Kevin. She knew everyone on the team and they all loved Ms. Dixie. She loved going to church at Gateway Church of God and loved everyone there. She loved working in her yard pulling weeds and watering her flowers and would always have to replace all the bricks Terri would knock down when she mowed. But most of all, she loved just being in her home sitting in her chair reading or watching LA Law or playing games on the computer. She did a lot of quilting with Susie, Vickie, Pat and Ellen. She made quilts for her great grandchildren that were designed especially for each one. She loved spending time with family and friends at Dennis’ camp. Cathy is the hostess with the mostest making every occasion special at home and the camp. We spent many holidays enjoying Dennis and Billy cooking for everyone.
She would sing a song to go with every occasion or conversation. We find ourselves doing the same thing. She had killer toes that could pinch anything they could reach. We learned about social distancing way before it was a thang!
She owned and operated Ellen’s House of Beauty. She retired from Calcasieu Parish Assessors office after thirty plus years and served for four different assessors.
She is survived by her daughters Vickie Lawson, Terri Hawes and Big Bob, and Susie and Dennis Scalia and by her daughter in love Cathy Lawson. She has eight grandchildren, William (BJ) Bourdier and Debbie, Chris Sanders, Dustin Lawson and Ashley, David Lawson, Nicholas Lawson, Robin Hawes, Steven Scalia and Anna and Chris Guidroz. She has numerous great and great great grandchildren, and a couple on the way. Sisters, Pat Burnett, Ellen Rogers, Cindy and husband Kevin Waldrop. She also leaves very special friends Vernon McGuire, Billy Simmons, and Debbie Newman.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years Jack Lawson and her only son Dennis Lawson. Siblings, B.J. Johnson, Marie Deville, and Louise (Weezie) Tuttle.
Visitation will be held from 4:00-9:00 Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Hixson Chapel in Westlake. The funeral will be at 10:00 Monday, May 31, 2021 also at Hixson Chapel in Westlake. She will be buried at Magnolia Cemetery in Westlake.
Thank you family for allowing me the privilege of writing Mama’s story. It was truly an honor to be able to do this last thing for her.
