

William Daniel Smith (b. April 3, 1950) - Bill or Billy to those who loved him best - of Westlake, passed away in his sleep on Monday, February 21st. He was 71. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Wendy in 2013. He is survived by his sister Susan and her husband O.L. Johnson also of Westlake; his daughter Lizbeth De Selm, her partner Tina and grandchildren, Lance and Jaclyn; his son Michael De Selm, his wife Nicole and grandchildren, Briana, Gabriella, and Xander.
Bill grew up in Golden Meadow, graduating in 1968 from South Lafourche High School. Bill’s thirst for adventure would call him onto the high seas, joining the United States Navy in 1969. Stationed in San Diego, CA for the majority of his career, it was here that he met and married the love of his life Wendy and her two children. He was a Vietnam Veteran with a 24-year career as an Aviation Mechanic earning the rank of Chief (E-7). Bill made numerous deployments across the globe, including a “World Cruise” as ship’s company aboard the USS Enterprise (CVN-65).
After a successful naval career, Bill and Wendy retired to Westlake, LA where Bill earned his B.S. in Elementary Education from McNeese State. While enrolled at McNeese, Bill was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and was involved with the Student Government Association. He will be missed by all. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation in his name to your charity of choice.
