He was born on May 17, 1940 in Toledo, Ohio to Grace ( Bodette) and Walter Hartz. Dale graduated from Ossining High School in New York in 1958. After high school his parents had enrolled Dale at Kings College Bible School which he attended for only a short period of time before excusing himself from class one day making his final exit from the school through the window. He drove himself straight to the Navy’s recruitment office and enrolled in the United States Navy. In 1963 he was granted an honorable discharge and received a full scholarship to play football at Northern Michigan University married his first wife had his son Todd in 1964 and graduated in 1967 with a B.S. Degree in Mathematics and Science.
Dale began his career as a teacher and quickly directed his teaching skills into the field of sales of sophisticated scientific and medical equipment working for IBM and Todd Medical and later moved into the retail automotive industry where he sold high end automobiles for O’Gara Coach Company and Silverstar Jaguar/ Lotus.
In 1980 Dale met his wife-to-be Suzanne Mattock while working in medical sales at a Doctor’s office where she was working as a nurse. Instead of making a sales pitch to the Doctor he sold Suzanne on a lunch, they were married in 1986 and he shared his heart with her for the next 26 years.
Over the years Dale took immense pleasure in his time with Suzanne and his Son Todd and his family. They had many adventures together, traveling frequently but his simpler times were spent watching sports, playing golf, and reading, barbecuing, nurturing his gardens and walking his dogs. His spiritual life was one of a quiet personal faith and will be remembered for his storytelling and “Dale-isms”.
Dale is survived by Suzanne Mattock Hartz, his beloved wife of 26 years; by his Son Todd Mitchell Hartz; by his Daughter in law Julie Ault Hartz; by his two Grandchildren, Linnea Dale Hartz and Mitchell Dominic Hartz; his brothers Larry, Robert, and James; and his Sisters in law’s Margie, Carol and Virginia; and by many friends gathered across the years. While living, and dying Dale was the greatest of teachers to his family and others. We have been blessed beyond measure by his fun loving presence, and his legacy will continue in our lives, and in those of our children.
