Robert Joseph McMullin was born on September 27, 1946 in Long Beach, CA, the youngest son of Richard S. McMullin and Helen E. Hunter. He grew up in Woodland Hills, CA, graduating from Canoga Park High School in 1964 and from UCLA in 1968. Bob had several careers, working as a social worker, a linguist at the Pentagon, and a manager and fundraiser for various non-profit organizations. Bob loved L.A. and considered California his home. He lived in Washington D.C.; Huntsville, AL; and many California cities including Lancaster, Pasadena, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Vina. He served as Executive Director for the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra and the Pasadena Symphony Orchestra and as the Director of Development for the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He also worked as the Director of Major Donors for both The L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center and for the San Francisco Stop AIDS Project. His last job was working for the monks at The Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux, where he helped with the fundraising efforts for The Sacred Stones Project, a reconstruction of a Spanish chapel using 12th century stones. Bob was proud of his life’s work in non-profit management for 33 years and had a special talent for raising money for these organizations.
Bob spent the last year of his life in Aurora, CO, where he lived down the street from his brother, Chuck and nephew, Sean. He died on November 13, 2023, at the age of 77. Bob loved opera! He felt that one of his missions in life was to teach others about this art form, and believed that he transformed his brother into an opera enthusiast. He also loved classical music and played the piano beautifully but rarely revealed his talent with others. Bob was a voracious reader and shared his latest readings with all who would listen. Bob had many friends and family who loved him for his strong opinionated personality, his loyalty, and his generosity towards people who were less fortunate. He will be missed by many and is survived by his brother, Chuck; 4 nieces and nephews; Michael (Darlene), Janet (Larry), Timothy (Michelle), and Sean (Eddie Ray); 4 great-nieces/nephews; Woody, Justin (Pam), Joseph, and William; and 2 great-great nieces/nephews; Hannah and Henry. He was preceded in death by his nephew, Matthew, and great-great niece, Rebecca.
