Love bound them in life, carried them through farewell, and now joins them once more in everlasting rest.

My grandpa fled Vietnam on a two-person boat. With nothing but two friends, a little food and water, a map, and a compass, he pushed out into the open ocean toward Thailand. When he told me that story, I knew there was no one stronger, more resilient, and more inspiring.

Born in the year of the dragon, he carried fire in him. He was a professor, a soldier, and the best storyteller I’ve ever known. Always with a smile on his face, a cigarette between his fingers; He seemed untouchable, timeless. He smoked every single day, yet somehow was still doing pull-ups at the age of 70. I never understood how.
Growing up, he picked me up from school every day, always waiting outside at least 30 minutes early just to make sure I got home safe. He tutored me through my lessons, cooked the best spaghetti, and filled my childhood with love and care.
I could tell a thousand stories about him, but the truth is simple: he was the coolest man I’ve ever known, and my admiration for him will never fade.

He was healthy until his last days, which makes his sudden passing so hard to understand. Maybe his heart broke along with ours after losing my grandma last year. Maybe he was eager to find her again. I’m grateful for every moment I had with him, but 32 years was not enough.
