May 14,1927-January 31, 2024
Doris Moriarty, aged 96, of New Milford, NJ, died peacefully on January 31, 2024 in her residence at Juniper Village In Paramus, New Jersey.
Born in New York City on May 14, 1927, Doris was the fifth child and second of two daughters of
Walter Ottes and Charlotte (Bohsung) Ottes. She was a 6th generation New Yorker on her father’s side. Her mother was also born in New York, the child of German immigrants. The families resided in the Yorkville section of Manhattan, an area of strong German heritage.
Doris was born on East 83rd Street, between 2nd and 3rd Avenues. The family had a spacious but not large apartment in a 5-floor walkup. An older brother died in infancy, but a final brother came after Doris, rounding the family out to five children. Somehow, everyone managed to have a bed of their own.
Growing up in the 1930s, Doris imbibed a can-do approach to a thrifty life that never left her. She was fond of telling stories about her childhood in New York. She marveled at how her mother made everything work. In addition to her own brood, Charlotte cooked for her stepfather and two stepbrothers who lived across the street. Doris and her younger brother Bob carried the hot plates of food over and back every day. When his two sons started their own households, Grandpa Bohsung (a concert violinist) moved in with the Otteses, with one scarce bedroom going to him. It was made to work!
In 1946, on a blind date, Doris met Francis Edward “Frank” Moriarty; the love of her life. Francis was still on active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II in the Pacific Theater. They married on July 17, 1946, and Doris moved from New York to live together with her new husband in the wilds of New Milford, New Jersey.
Their first child, Francis Edward, was born in autumn 1947. A second son, Kenneth James, arrived in late 1948. Frank, then a merchant seaman, was mostly away at sea and Doris and the two boys were living with her mother-in-law, Evelyn Moriarty. Upon leaving the merchant marine, Doris and Frank purchased their own home in New Milford, in which they resided for almost 71 years until 2023.
A third child, Janet Ann, was born in 1960. Doris devoted herself to raising her children while Frank won the bread as a mathematics teacher. Doris was the best housekeeper imaginable and kept her family
well-nourished with a never-ending variety of beautiful, delicious meals.
As Janet grew, Doris decided she would try her hand in the work world. A position in the pro shop at Haworth Golf Club was available, Doris applied, and got the job. She stayed for 25 years and thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. Here, Doris was able to put her organizational and social skills to good work, setting up the
all-important tee times and handling sales of golf equipment and apparel.
Over the years, the family expanded to encompass her two sons and daughter, Ken’s wife Jane, Francis’s four daughters, Janet’s four sons, five great granddaughters, and one great grandson; all of whom survive her.
Doris’s husband, Francis, pre-deceased her in May 2023. She will be buried with him in the New Jersey State Military Cemetery in Wrightstown, New Jersey.
The family would like to extend its heartfelt thanks to the compassionate care both Doris and Frank received from everyone at Holy Name Hospice, as well as all the staff at Juniper Village Assisted Living in Paramus.
