Devoted husband of Flavia (nee Generelli). Devoted father of Angela and her husband Jim Thompson, Janice and her husband Francois Saudeau, and Elaine and her husband Marian Srokosz. Loving grandfather to Matthew Thompson and his wife Diana, James Thompson and his wife Kristen, Joseph Thompson and his wife Laur Plawker, Evan Srokosz and his wife Beth, Lee Srokosz and his wife Nicole. Wonderful great grandfather to Nathan Thompson, Sarah Thompson, Jack Thompson, Stella Thompson, Quinton Srokosz, Riker Srokosz, Emmett Srokosz. Joseph was one of six children in the Mauro household. He was born on Flag Day and his father raised the flag that day celebrating the first son born after three daughters. Only his youngest brother Louis Mauro Jr. survives him today. His siblings Josephine LaCarruba, Marie Trivisonno, Helen Galfo, and John Mauro have predeceased him. Joseph served in the Navy during World War II. He was a letter carrier for the Fairview, NJ post office until his retirement.
Joseph was a man who understood the depth of a generous heart. It was natural for him to consider all humanity with kindness and admiration. His gentle manner, genuine smile, and positive attitude attributed to his long life and those fortunate to know him reaped the benefit of his benevolence. Joseph believed in the unity of family. His devotion to his wife and his daughters was based solely on the power of love. As his daughters grew up his quiet reserve helped balance all that feminine energy, of which there was plenty in the house!
Joseph was blessed with the gift of understanding and constructing buildings, or anything dimensional. As children, his daughters watched him build their grandfather’s garage from the first shovel in the ground to the last shingle on the roof. Tools of the trade were so a part of him. He would get so engrossed in his work that there were many occasions he nearly missed dinner.
Later in life, there were many years Joseph cared for his wife Flavia who had early onset Alzheimer’s disease. He managed her care with grace and unflinching devotion. He took this burden upon himself, sadly sometimes missing some precious family moments, however the fierceness of his determination to preserve her dignity will stay forever etched in our memory.
Our family can easily say that Joseph Mauro was exceptional, as surely his legacy of light will transcend to all that knew him.
The family will receive their relatives and friends on Thursday, June 13th at Becker Funeral Home at 219 Kinderkamack Road in Westwood, NJ at 2pm – 4pm and 7pm – 9pm.
