Born on September 3, 1939, in Teaneck, New Jersey, to Marie Rhode McCann and Peter William McCann, Peter grew up in Teaneck and graduated from Teaneck High School. On September 1, 1963, he married the love of his life, Carol Maurer, at Holy Trinity Church in Hackensack, New Jersey. Together, Peter and Carol built a beautiful marriage and family, raising their children and making lifelong friends during 20 years in Bergenfield and the past 40 years in Hillsdale.
Peter was a devoted member of Grace Lutheran Church in Teaneck for more than 70 years, serving as Congregation President from 1970 to 1975 and as Chairman of the Building Committee for the new Grace Church in 1972. He also served in the United States Army in 1962 and was the Founding President of the Bergenfield Swim Club, which opened in 1975 as a fun, recreational, and community-oriented place for local families.
Professionally, Peter enjoyed a successful career in sales and finance in the automobile business, working with Lincoln/Mercury, Porsche/Audi, Volkswagen, and Cadillac. Known in the car business as “Tom,” he had a gift for connecting with people, telling a good story, and making a deal feel like a handshake between friends. Cars were both his career and his passion.
More than anything, Peter deeply loved his wife and family. He treasured meals with family and friends, drives in his convertibles, and sharing the kind of classic “Dad humor” that made everyone groan first and smile immediately after.
Peter was predeceased by his twin brother, James, and his older brother, Ronald. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carol Maurer McCann; his son Brian and wife Rosy, who was like a daughter to him; his daughter Diane; grandchildren Charles and wife Kelsey, Brandon and wife Mariel, Kristina, and Anthony; and two 18-month old great-granddaughters, Nora and Emmy, who were bright highlights of his final chapter.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Peter’s life at Becker Funeral Home in Westwood, New Jersey, on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Peter’s memory to Villa Marie Claire, the hospice home where Peter and his family experienced extraordinary compassion, dignity, and care during his final days.
Peter’s life was like riding his ’48 Lincoln convertible in a great parade — filled with family, friendship, community, laughter, and waving with love along the way. He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.
