Theresa C., 90, resident of Emerson, died February 12, 2023. Born at home on 51st Street in New York City(NYC), NY, she was the sixth child of Bernard and Mary Kiernan, nee Bradley. After attending Cathedral High School in Manhattan, Theresa began her career employed at Metropolitan Life in NYC. After a few years, she moved on to JP Morgan Bank where she worked in administrative/bookkeeper support for over 15 years before resigning when she got married. Theresa later moved to central New Jersey and spent 18 years at the Township of Aberdeen, NJ water department in a similar role of administrative support.
On January 21, 1967, Theresa married Harry Monahan at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Fort Lee, NJ. They moved to several locations throughout the northeast in NY, NJ, and PA. Theresa loved crewel embroidery. Many of her nieces and nephews have intricate patterned table clothes and baby blankets which she made for them as gifts. Theresa and Harry were devout Catholics and strong advocates of the Pro-Life movement. Theresa and Harry loved to travel and went on numerous trips throughout the world including Ireland, Italy, France, Germany, Spain, Holland, and Amsterdam. But there was no doubt that their favorite trips were to Fatima, Portugal where they went for several pilgrimages to see where Our Blessed Mother appeared to three shepherd children in 1917. Harry passed away unexpectedly in Matamoros, PA on May 19, 2013, after their 46-year marriage. In 2015, Theresa returned to the northern Bergen County, NJ area and was surrounded by her extended family during her final years. She loved attending the large family functions – weddings, showers, birthdays, any holiday celebrations. She was as sweet as they come and very proud of her Irish heritage.
Theresa was extremely generous to those less fortunate with her limited retirement income. She gave away thousands of dollars annually to all those “poor souls” because they needed it more than she did. She has three surviving sisters - Mary, Catherine (her identical twin), and Ann - and was affectionately known as “Aunt T” among her 24 nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her parents, and brothers, Pat, Eddie, and Bernie.
There will be a Catholic Mass to celebrate her life at Our Lady of Victories, Harrington Park, NJ with internment to follow at St Mary’s Cemetery in Port Jervis, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in her memory to either St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN or the New Jersey Right to Life Foundation.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.Becker-FuneralHome.com for the Monahan family.
