Mrs. Barbara (Surowiec) Vicino, 79, of Wethersfield, CT, loving wife to the late James G. “Big Jim” Vicino, peacefully passed away at her home, Saturday, April 6, 2024. Barbara was born on November 24, 1944 in New Britain, daughter to the late Viola E. Surowiec. She was raised in Newington, attended Newington schools and graduated from Newington High School, Class of 1962.
Barbara began her career at the West Hartford Police Department, where she worked in the Detective Division Administration. After marrying the love of her life, “Big Jim”, Barbara eventually became the bookkeeper of her husband’s family business, the A.J. Vicino and Sons Nursery, Rocky Hill, CT.
Barbara was a longtime faithful communicant of Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish and a member of the Sacred Heart Guild. In addition, Barbara was a lover of animals, as well as a faithful donor to the ASPCA, the K-9 units of the Wethersfield, Rocky Hill, and Cromwell Police Departments, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, the Wounded Warrior Project and Shriner’s Hospitals for Children.
She will be dearly missed by many cousins in South Carolina and California and her close friends, Janet “Jan” Chandler and Don and Marguerite Griffin. In addition to her husband and mother, Barbara was predeceased by her brother, Thomas Edward Surowiec.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to Barbara, Thursday, April 11, 2024 from 8:30-9:45 a.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 10:30 a.m. in Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish, 601 Silas Deane Hwy, Wethersfield. Barbara will be laid to rest next to her husband in Village Cemetery, Marsh St., Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the ASPCA, one of the K-9 units of the above-mentioned police departments or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
