Gerardo Bello

Gerardo Bello, 85, of New York, NY, beloved husband for 12 years of Adelfa (Zapata) Bello, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on Thursday, January 6, 2022. Born in Linares, Nariño, Colombia, on August 28, 1936, he was the son of the late Jose M. Bello Reyes and Matilde Acosta. He served in the Colombian Navy for more than 20 years, and worked at the American Embassy in Bogotá, Colombia for seven years prior to coming to the United States. Gerardo worked as an electrician for many years. He retired from the Delmonico Hotel in New York City. He was an avid chess player, and loved soccer (go, Millos!). Although he lived in the USA for over 30 years, he kept abreast of the events in Colombia by reading the online Colombian newspapers every morning, followed by a couple online chess matches. His love for political science brought him to run for councilman in his younger years in Colombia, where he also became president of the Villa Luz Neighborhood Association. Gerardo had a great sense of humor, loved good food and spending time with family, and has a passion for traveling; he was blessed to have visited many countries, embracing many cultures.

A loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, Gerardo will be forever missed by his devoted wife Adelfa; eight children, Libardo and wife Norelvis, Maty and husband Roger, David and wife Icela, Claudia and husband Marcos, Rafael, Maria and husband Rafael, Diana and Yeison; fifteen adored grandchildren, Jenny, Joshua, Jordan, Jessica, Jaden, Kristian, Johnny, Jose, Juan, Maria, Anna, Sarah, David, Emiliano and Natalia and two cherished great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Maelle. In addition, he is survived by his eight siblings, Nelly, Ines, Vicente, Giovanni, Edilberto, Hugo, Inqa and Servio as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family members, both in the U.S. and in Colombia. He was sadly predeceased by his beloved son, Carlos Alberto. The family would like to express gratitude to all his relatives and friends in New York and far away, who showed constant concern for his health and well-being, Special thanks to Dr Krysthel Engstrom, Mount Sinai Cardiology, Midtown Heath Center (NYHTC), Dr Mark Godfrey, Hartford Hospital Bliss 8, the Hartford Healthcare Palliative Care Team, and the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel. The Bello siblings want to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Adelfa for her constant dedication and loving care of Gerardo.

Calling hours are Sunday (January 9) from 1-2:30 p.m. concluding with a Prayer Service at 2:30 p.m. at the D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Gerardo Bello, 85, de Nueva York, NY, un Católico Devoto, amado esposo por 12 años de Adelfa (Zapata) Bello, falleció pacíficamente en su casa rodeado de su amada familia el jueves 6 de enero de 2022. Nació en Linares, Nariño, Colombia, el 28 de agosto de 1936, y se crió en Cumbitara Nariño, Colombia en donde vivió con su familia materna. Era hijo de los fallecidos José M. Bello Reyes y Matilde Acosta. Sirvió en la Armada Nacional de Colombia durante más de 20 años y trabajó en la Embajada de Estados Unidos en Bogotá, Colombia durante 7 años antes de llegar a los Estados Unidos. Gerardo trabajó como electricista durante muchos años. Se retiró del Hotel Delmonico en la ciudad de Nueva York. Era un ávido jugador de ajedrez y amaba el fútbol (Millos Campeón!). Aunque vivió en los EE. UU. Durante más de 30 años, se mantuvo al tanto de los eventos en Colombia leyendo los periódicos colombianos en línea todas las mañanas, seguido de un par de partidos de ajedrez en línea, deleitando sus oídos de hermosa música de cuerda colombiana. Su amor por la ciencia política lo llevó a postularse para concejal en su juventud en Colombia, donde también se convirtió en presidente de la Junta de Acción Comunal de Villa Luz, en Bogotá.

Gerardo tenía un gran sentido del humor, le encantaba la buena comida, estar entre amigos y familia, y sentía gran pasión por los viajes: tuvo la suerte de haber visitado muchos países, abrazando muchas culturas.

Amado esposo, padre, abuelo y bisabuelo, Gerardo será extrañado para siempre por su devota esposa Adelfa; ocho hijos, Libardo y esposa Norelvis, Maty y esposo Roger, David y esposa Icela, Claudia y esposo Marcos, Gerardo Rafael, Maria y esposo Rafael, Yeison y Diana; quince adorados nietos, Jenny, Joshua, Jordan, Jessica, Jaden, Kristian, Johnny, Jose, Juan, Maria, Anna, Sarah, David, Emiliano y Natalia, y dos queridos bisnietos, Jeremy y Maelle. Además, le sobreviven sus hermanos, Nelly, Inés, Edilberto, Hugo, Inqa, Giovanni y Servio Tulio, así como muchas sobrinas, sobrinos y familiares extendidos. Fue tristemente fallecido luego de su amado hijo, Carlos Alberto.

La familia desea expresar su gratitud a todos sus familiares y amigos en Nueva York y en otros lugares, quienes mostraron una preocupación constante por su salud y bienestar. Un agradecimiento especial a la Dra. El horario de visita será el domingo (9 de enero) de 1 a 2:30 p.m. concluyendo con un servicio de oración a las 2:30 p.m. en D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Boulevard, Wethersfield. Donaciones en memoria de Gerardo pueden ser efectuadas a la American Heart Association.
