Jean Andrea Swanson Smith, 80, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2026, one day after her 80th birthday. Born on May 14, 1946, in Hartford, Jean grew up in New Britain and was the beloved daughter of William and Grace Swanson.
She graduated from New Britain Senior High School in 1964, then earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1968 and a Master’s degree in Education and Guidance in 1969 from Central Connecticut State University. She began her career teaching fourth grade in Meriden.
In 1970, Jean married Richard J. Smith, with whom she lovingly spent over 55 years. She devoted several years to raising her family at home before returning to the classroom.
Jean later served for 19 years at Highcrest Elementary School in Wethersfield as a Reading Recovery teacher, a role that reflected her deep commitment to helping children learn and thrive before retiring in 2007.
In retirement, Jean and Rick made their home in Fort Myers, Florida, where they enjoyed the beaches and formed many lasting friendships.
Jean was an artist at heart who loved painting, drawing and crafting. In her retirement, she spent more time by the water and loved to stroll along the beaches of Ft. Myers collecting shells that she would inevitably turn into works of art. Jean loved to play cards with friends and family and could spend hours scouring thrift shops for the best bargains. In her downtime, she enjoyed reading and snuggling her cat, Misty.
Jean was predeceased by her brother, Alan Swanson. She is survived by the loves of her life, her devoted husband, Richard Smith, her son, Kevin Smith, and her daughter, Andrea Kessner; their spouses, Lori and Adam; and her seven beloved grandchildren, Brandon, Daniel, and Matthew Smith, and Ashley, Jake, Alexis, and Justin Kessner, who brought her great joy through the years.
Family and friends are invited to a graveside service on Saturday, May 23 at 12 noon at Village Cemetery, 1 Marsh Street, Wethersfield. The D’Esopo Funeral Chapel, Wethersfield has been entrusted with the funeral arrangements. To share a memory of Jean, please visit www.desopofuneralchapel.com
