

John Mitchell Herold, age 88, of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 1, 2018 with his family by his side. Born in Hartford on December 12, 1929, the son of the late William W. and Frances (Mitchell) Herold. He was a lifetime resident of Wethersfield, having lived most of that time in Griswoldville. He worked hard to try and perfect Harry Well’s horseradish recipe. Oh the stories he could tell! He graduated from Wethersfield High School, Class of 1947. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served in Korea from 1951 to 1952. He retired from Industrial Risk Insurers in February 1992 after 37 years of service. He was a lifelong member of the First Church of Christ and Griswoldville Chapel of Wethersfield, a longtime member of the VFW, served 25 years on the Wethersfield Fire Department (Company 2) and he was a member of the Wethersfield-Rocky Hill Elks Lodge#2308. In addition he was a charter member of the Winding Brook 4-H Club dating back to 1941. He, along with several close friends, founded the Polar Bears Snowmobile Club, with headquarters in his backyard that expanded later to Granville, MA, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends at Hawks Nest Beach, Old Lyme. Athletics were a big part of John’s life, Twilight League baseball, Semi-Pro soccer, tennis, softball, bowling and golf, in addition he was a longtime participant of the Wethersfield Adult Men’s Softball League until the age of 63. John is survived by his two daughters; Donna Hemmann (Mark) of Wethersfield, Deborah Seaton (Andy) of Hinesburg, VT, his son, David Herold (Marianne) of Wethersfield. Grandchildren Mark Hemmann Jr. (Lori), Suzanne Derwin (Shawn), Eric Seaton (fiancée Bekah), Meg Seaton, Brynn Seaton, David John Herold (Brianna) and great grandchildren, Hannah Hemmann, Kayden Derwin, Aubrie Derwin and William Flynn. John was predeceased by his wife Nancy (Whelton) of 51 years, his brother William Herold of Plant City, FL and his sister Marjorie Hart of New Hartford. The family would like to give special thanks to his caregivers; Cindy, Michelle, Gina, Diane and Sharra.
There will be no calling hours or memorial service. Burial will be private at Wethersfield Village Cemetery at a later date.
