

John Rote, beloved friend, of Carole Franco, passed away peacefully in Manchester Hospital on February 13, 2017. He was born on March 24, 1928, in the Netherlands and was educated at Oxford, where he received a Masters degree in PPE (Philosophy, Politics and Economics.). As a young man, he fought bravely in the Dutch Underground during World War II. A great sports man, he played field hockey in the 1956 Olympics and was a member of the Privateers.
A true internationalist, Mr. Rote traveled the world as an investment banker and
created Tesoro, a company on the New York stock exchange. In addition to his business life, he had a passion for collecting art and sculpture and helped promote the careers of many budding artists around the world. A religious man of generous spirit, he participated in medical airlifts to deliver medicines to the needy via AmeriCares, and he assisted in raising money to further medical research. He had a dream of creating a Foundation where funds could be used for the many causes he believed in. He lived for many years in Greenwich and Manchester, CT, and upstate NY, but was a true global citizen. He will be missed by his family, his many friends and those that knew him around the world.
He is predeceased by his daughter, Claris, and is survived by three children whom he adored, Christopher, John and Alexandra.
A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 on Thursday, February 23rd, at Assumption Church, 285 West Center Street, Manchester, CT, 860-643-2195. A private burial will take place in Greenwich following the Memorial Service.
