

John Peter Spinelli, 90, of Wethersfield, husband of the late Anne (Massaro) Spinelli, died Monday, (December 19, 2005) at Glastonbury Health Care. He was born May 28, 1915 in Thompsonville and was the son of the late Michele Spinelli and Maria (Ardito) Spinelli. He co-owned and managed the operation of Spinelli Super Stores; the first independently owned chain grocery stores in Connecticut, with locations throughout the Greater Hartford area, until his retirement in 1956. He was the first individual to coin the phrase ""Super"" relative to the grocery store business. Those who knew John will remember him by his love of reading and music. He is survived by three sons, Michael Spinelli and his wife, Donna of North Windham, Anthony Spinelli and his wife, Ann of Seymour and John P. Spinelli, Jr. and his wife Linda of Port St. Lucie, FL.; a daughter, Marie Spinelli of Marlborough; two sisters, Angela Peters of Windsor and Ann Shoemaker of Reno, NV; a brother, Angelo Spinelli of Windsor; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 27 at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Entombment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, Hartford. Those attending the Mass can greet the family in the Narthex (front entrance) of the Incarnation Church at 9:30 a.m. (prior to the Mass).
