Josephine (Visconti) Cieri, 99, of Newington, family matriarch, passed away peacefully at home with her family by her side on Monday, January 15, 2024. She is now happily reunited with the man she loved for 80 years, her beloved late husband, Philip J. Cieri. Mom was four months shy of her 100th birthday, a goal she regularly expressed wanting to achieve, but she became ill in November and her body just couldn’t recover.
Born in Hartford on May 11, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Giovanni and Adalgisa (Stoppa) Visconti. Josephine grew up in Hartford and then Newington, and attended secretarial school after graduation. She worked in the insurance industry, meeting her husband Philip at 18 years old, which they both described as “love at first sight.” They married when she was 20 and he was 23, and she worked alongside Philip as a partner in Cieri Pharmacy for almost 50 years. Josephine was an amazing singer, singing in the operatic style of Bel Canto Choir. She was also a talented oil painting artist. Her love reached beyond her family to many others and everyone loved visiting her, swimming in the pool and eating her delicious food. She taught by living a good life with faith, unconditional love and laughter, and she enjoyed life every day.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Josephine will be forever missed by her son, Frederick Cieri; her daughter, Linda Hutt and Brian Rider; her adored grandson, Colin Hutt and his wife Emilie, two step-grandchildren, Ashley Skare and husband Karl and James Rider, two step-great-grandchildren, Solara and Sage Skare with another cherished great-grandchild on the way, Baby Hutt, who she was so looking forward to meeting. She is also survived by her nephew, Eugene Cieri and his wife Anna; her nieces, Pamela Ouellette and Catherine Cieri, as well as many other extended family members.
In addition to her husband and parents, Josephine was predeceased by her son-in-law, William Hutt; her sister, Lena “Rena” Visconti; her brother-in-law, William Cieri and her nephew, William Cieri, Jr.
