

Melvin “Mel” William McOmber, Jr., 93, of Wethersfield, loving husband for 72 years of Lois (Gallup) McOmber, peacefully passed away at home with his loving family by his bedside on Saturday, September 2, 2017. Born on December 20, 1923 in New Britain, he was the son of the late Melvin W. McOmber, Sr. and Gladys (Bradbury) McOmber and was a lifelong resident of Wethersfield. Mel graduated from Wethersfield High School, where he was an outstanding athlete. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps, where he became a B25 pilot during WWII. Upon returning from the service, he was employed for 35 years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft. Mel was past President of Pine Acres Swim & Tennis Club and was a former member of Hospitality Lodge #128 A.F. & A.M. He was also a champion archer, talented craftsman and avid fly fisherman. In addition to his beloved wife, and high school sweetheart, Lois, Mel will be forever missed by his son; David McOmber and wife Stephanie of Wethersfield; his daughter, Marilyn Corcoran of Newington; six adored grandchildren; nine cherished great-grandchildren and two sisters-in-law, Joyce McOmber and Katherine Schimanskey, along with many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, Charles McOmber. The family wishes to express special thanks to the Hospice Care, Jodie Lenix, Ann and Joyce.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 9, at 11 a.m. in First Church of Christ, 250 Main St. Wethersfield. Burial with military honors will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. The family will receive relatives and friends from 10:30 a.m. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Attn: Office of Development, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607 or an organization of your choice.
