

Peter P. McGrath, 86, of West Hartford, died Wednesday (October 27, 2010) in Hartford. Born in Camden, ME, he was the son of the late Peter Paul McGrath and Emma (Ritterbush) McGrath Windvand. Peter graduated from Camden High School in 1942 where he excelled as a scholar and athlete. Growing up during the Depression, he helped support his family by chauffeuring and caddying for the ""summer people."" After graduation, he followed in his father's footsteps enrolling at Boston College. He enlisted in the Navy and became a submariner during World War II. Following his discharge, he graduated from Dartmouth College in 1946, marrying Virginia Kopp and beginning work at CT Mutual Life Insurance Company that same year. In 1951, Peter and Virginia had a daughter, Laura. Peter worked at CT Mutual for 42 years, retiring in 1988 as Agency Controller. In 1980, he married Susan Hermann and they moved to South Carolina in 1988. He returned to West Hartford in 1998 to live out his years in pursuit of his interests, especially acting, at his beloved Chatfield Adult Living Community. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Laura and David DiGalbo of Burlington and his brother Stephen McGrath of Daytona Beach, FL. Calling hours will held on Monday (November 1) from 3-7 p.m. at the D'Esopo Funeral Chapel, 277 Folly Brook Blvd., Wethersfield. Graveside funeral services with military honors will be held on Friday (November 5) at 2 p.m. at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Camden, ME.
