Charles Edward Defendorf, 75, of Clark and Whiting, NJ, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 1st, 2018 at home. Charley was born in the Bronx, NY to Charles E. Defendorf and Tuovi M. Ruhala. He lived in New York City until he was 13 when his family moved to New Jersey. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering in 1964 from Newark College of Engineering, now NJIT, and went on to receive his Master's Degree in Civil Engineering from Northeastern University.
Charley began working at Bell Telephone in Boston, MA and moved on to Anderson-Nichols Consulting Engineers, also in Boston. He spent most of his career at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Bureau of Flood Control in Trenton as a supervising engineer until retiring in 2010. It was there that he met his wife, Regina, who was also working as a civil engineer. Charley was also employed as an engineering adjunct professor at Essex County College. In his retirement, he kept busy working several part-time jobs including a consultant to the N.J.DEP and most recently he enjoyed working with Amazon in Woodbridge, NJ.
Charley is survived by his wife, Regina Defendorf; his son, Charles Michael Defendorf, DO; and 2 brothers, Richard Defendorf and Robert Defendorf.
A Memorial Gathering will be held on Wednesday, December 5th, 2018 from 10-11am at The Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Road, Whiting, NJ 08759. A Memorial Service will be held following the gathering at 11am at the funeral home. Interment will follow at Whiting Memorial Park in Whiting, NJ.
