

David M. Flanders, 90 of Whiting, N.J. passed away on Feb. 2. He leaves a life that was full of adventure, stories and a love for his family. Dave, as he was commonly known, was born in Berwyn, Illinois, he attended NYU and Northwestern University. He served in the US Navy and worked in sales in NYC. Dave settled and raised his family in Kendall Park, NJ. He wrote a column for an RV magazine and ended his career after retiring from Dow Jones.
Dave was an avid race fan who enjoyed NASCAR and who spent many years each Fall taking a crowd to Watkins Glen for the formula one races. It was at Watkins Glen that he became known as Mother F. His chili was legendary. He enjoyed the outdoors, camping and bicycle riding. Dave was a voracious reader and loved history. He lived life on his own terms, always very genuine and was a “What you see is what you get” kind of guy. He embraced youth and used to say, “Youth is wasted on the young.” Dave enjoyed spending time with people of all ages, while sharing witticisms, Dave-isms and laughter. He loved Maine and summered in East Boothbay for many years with his family and friends. He said that,”He had a great life.”and it certainly was a life well lived.
Dave was predeceased by his parents, Elizabeth M. And William D. Flanders, his ex-wife Margot Flanders and a granddaughter, Delaney Flanders.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Napolitano Flanders, Daughters, Stephanie Reed (Eric) Jennifer Ryan (Kevin), his sons, Bill and Jeff (Bonnie), by his Stepchildren, Tim Larsen, David Larsen, John Larsen and Rebecca Slusarchyk. Dave is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
There will be no service at his request. He will be cremated and his family will scatter his ashes in his beloved State of Maine at a later date. Anderson & Campbell Funeral Home, 115 Lacey Rd. Whiting, NJ is in charge of the arrangements.
With his sense of humor in mind, we are sharing the chili recipe to feed a crowd:
Mother F’s Chili
6 slices of bacon
5 lbs of hamburger meat
3 peppers
2 jalapeño peppers
5-6 cloves of garlic
3 med sized onions
1 c chopped celery
4 cans red pack crushed tomatoes
1 can Campbell's beef consommé soup
5 TBSP chili powder
2 TBSP cumin
1TBSP oregano
4-5 cans of Goya kidney beans rinsed
Chop all vegetables and place on stand by
Crisp bacon in chili pot, drain and set aside
Add hamburger meat and brown.
Add all vegetables when meat is almost brown, cook until soft
Add 4 cans of crushed tomatoes and undiluted soup
Add chili powder, cumin and oregano
Add bacon and simmer 30 min
Add rinsed beans and simmer a few more minutes.
Let sit covered for at least a couple of hours.
Stir occasionally.
