George A. Thompson, 92, of Whiting, passed away on Friday, March 20 surrounded by family. Born in Jersey City, he resided there most of his life before moving to Whiting in 1994. He was a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, having served during WWII. He served on the USS Essex in the Pacific Theater. He was a member of the Jersey City Fire Dept. for 30 years, retiring as Captain in 1977. He was also a mail handler for the Post Office in Kearny for many years retiring in 1989. He loved NYC, swimming in the ocean and spent countless hours on the boardwalk. He was known for giving big hugs, kisses, singing at the top of his lungs and dancing with uninhibited joy! His comments were flavored with that special Thompson humor. He was kind, generous and "one of a kind". He is by far the best father (alias Pa), grandpa and great grandpa ever! His winning smile and loving ways will be remembered for generations. He was an independent spirit right to the end.
