She was the last surviving member of her family of 11- Brothers and Sisters. Although never married, or had children of her own, she was known by everyone as “Aunt Lucy”.
At the age of 12- her days were long. She helped her Mother care for one of her Sisters 3- Children, after her Sister passed away at the age of 27 years old. Aunt Lucy would come home from school and help her Mother with the children’s care, including bathing and bedtime duties. These responsibilities extended into the late night- when after all was completed, she would then start her homework.
She was a retired executive secretary at Western Union Telegraph. She commuted every day to Manhattan from home.
She leaves behind an extensive family of nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews, and even great grandnieces and nephews.
She loved listening to Frank Sinatra, watching old “who done it” murder mysteries, and cooking shows on T.V. Her biggest joy was crocheting blankets. I’m sure she must have made a blanket for every member of our entire family.
In her last few years she began crocheting baby blankets for a charity that distributed them to needy single mothers. Aunt Lucy was honored to make these blankets for such a great purpose. She was determined to make as many as she could because she knew how much they were appreciated. The receiving Mom’s were so thankful to receive them especially since they were handmade and so beautiful.
She was a woman of extreme kindness, great strength, uncompromising, compassion and empathy and quiet generosity.
She possessed the grace of a Queen – “Aunt Lucy” Militello was truly a great wonderful woman.
