Fay Chandley Hogle, 94, of Wichita Falls, passed away Aug. 18, 2010, at Presbyterian Village North in Dallas, Texas. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be at First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. with Reverend Ruth E. Clendenin officiating. A reception will follow at the church.
Family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, Aug. 23, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Arrangements are under the direction of Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
Throughout her life, Fay sought always to learn and explore. She once wrote “As one door closed, I always found an open door to challenge me.” Her determination, fierce independence, and keen business acumen forged a life experience filled with many roles, from accomplished businesswoman and church educator to beloved wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother
Her enthusiastic commitment to service led to leadership positions in both community and church organizations. She served as president of the Women’s Forum Garden Club, superintendent of the junior department at First Presbyterian Church, president of the Cunningham Elementary Parents and Teachers Association, and was honored with a lifetime membership in the Congress of Parents and Teachers.
Fay was born in Robstown, Texas, on March 24, 1916, the youngest in John Sea and Ella Barton Chandley’s family of seven children. Fay was a resident of Wichita Falls most of her life and graduated from Wichita Falls Senior High School in 1934. In her senior year friends introduced Fay to Lee Hogle of Electra, Texas. She married Lee in October 1934.
The couple moved to Electra where Lee managed, then later owned, the Modern Market grocery store. The Hogle grocery enterprise eventually grew to include Hogle’s Foodliner in Wichita Falls and two locations in Oklahoma.
Advocacy for quality in childhood education was important to Fay. In 1964 she was elected to serve as president of the Cunningham PTA, providing leadership in fundraising and program planning for the school. The First Presbyterian Church also was a foundational focus in Fay’s life for more than 80 years. She began teaching as an assistant in Sunday school classes at the age of 15. In 1965 Fay served as superintendent of the junior department at the church. She was a member of the Presbyterian Women’s Association.
Fay was a life-long gardener who excelled in creating floral arrangements. Her talent found further expression in the Women’s Forum Garden Club, in which she served as president and a flower show judge in the 1960s. Her 40-year association with the forum included several clubs. As an avid bridge player, she belonged to both the Women’s Forum and University Bridge Clubs.
She continued to fulfill her passion for business in later years by managing Hogle Investment Company. At the age of 90, she was still a savvy bridge player and an active member of PEO, a philanthropic organization for the advancement of women through academic scholarships.
Her many associates in business and fellow members in community organizations brought Fay enduring friendships. Her ready laugh and sense of humor, kindness and care for others left family, friends, and her caregivers at Presbyterian Village North many warm stories to keep her memory close.
Fay was preceded in death by Lee, her husband of 59 years. She is survived by three daughters: Reverend Lee Morrison of Tucson, Arizona; Janis Hogle Robinson and husband, Craig, of Dallas, Texas; and Linda Hogle, PhD., of Madison, Wisconsin. Grandchildren: Eric Morrison and wife, Deborah, of Tucson, Arizona; Christopher Morrison and wife, Tracey, of Morgan Hill, California; Caitlin and Ben Robinson of Dallas, Texas. Great-grandchildren: Sonora and Ella Morrison of Tucson, Arizona; and Taylor Morrison of Morgan Hill, California. Nephews: Hogye Hogle and Van Hogle of Texas.
