

Gwen Beer, 95, longtime resident of Wichita Falls, passed away Tuesday, August 10, 2010 in Lubbock. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday, August 14, 2010 at Southside Baptist Church, 2210 Holliday, with Pastor Charles Nichols officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:00 until 7:30 Friday evening at Hampton Vaughan Funeral Home.
Gwen was born on October 16, 1914 in Whitesboro, Tx. to L. O. Mathis and Virginia Taliaferro Mathis. During the depression in 1929, Gwen’s mother decided she should quit school and go to work and was never afforded the opportunity to go back and finish high school. In the early years she worked at the garment factory and a local doctor’s office. She married Eddie Henry Beer on December 24, 1933 in Walters, Ok. and he preceded her in death in 1988. For the most part, she was a housewife and mother. She was a longtime member of Southside Baptist Church and taught in the Primary Department for many years.
Gwen was survived by one son, Eddie R. Beer and wife, Elvira, of Lubbock and three grandchildren, Vickie (Beer) Naylor and husband, Stephen; Eddie A. Beer and wife, Pam; Cynthia (Beer) Blakely and husband, David; also nine great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Roy Chancellor, Don Griffin, Marshal Haigood, Leonard Knecht, Don Lewis, Gene Pogue and Larry Toney.
