Amanda Lyn Stegner, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend, passed away on January 21, 2026, at the age of 46. Amanda had a severe lung infection that ultimately spread throughout her body. She fought bravely for 13 days before succumbing to it.
Amanda was born on April 5, 1979, in Harper, Kansas. She started life on the Vornauf family farm near Norwich, Kansas. Lots of fun times were had while living on the farm. At the age of 5, the family moved to Harper. The fun continued, and lots of memories were made as “town kids”.
Amanda attended Harper Elementary from Kindergarten through 8th grade. She then attended and graduated from Chaparral High School in 1997. Amanda was awarded an art scholarship to Cowley County Community College, graduating in 1999. She then attended Kansas State University for a short while.
Amanda discovered her love of art at Chaparral High School. Her talent was admired by many. The City of Harper hired her to paint two murals on the City Pool building. She created a collection of works to submit to Cowley College for an art scholarship audition. One of her paintings was too large to fit in the portfolio. When she walked in carrying the painting, the professor saw it from across the room, came over to her, and offered her a scholarship on the spot. Amanda’s art professor, Dr. Doug Hunter, mentored her, making her his student assistant. Doug entrusted her with several commissioned projects, including a mural on the side of an Ark City business. The college project she was most proud of was helping design and complete the backdrop for the college production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. In October of 2020, the Wichita Art Museum featured one of Amanda’s pieces as part of the “Foot in the Door” exhibition. Amanda never stopped creating. Every piece of art carried her heart, her soul, and her love. She didn’t just make art – she gave pieces of herself. To know her work was to know Amanda.
As much as Amanda loved her art, she loved her family more. She would do anything for them. With dreams of building her family’s forever home, Amanda and her husband, James, joined Habitat for Humanity. They started the process last March and have completed almost all their home-ownership requirements. They’d hoped to receive their actual address in the next month or two. Amanda and James built many great relationships with their habitat community members and mentors.
Amanda and James were blessed to have spent 17 wonderful years together, marrying on November 9th, 2018. Together, they raised two exceptional children. Amanda made sure to bring them up with kindness, understanding, love & humor. She helped raise and blessed us with two miniature versions of herself to cherish.
Amanda was preceded in death by her grandparents, Richard and Roberta Bishop; her grandfather, Don Vornauf; her dear friend, Jeremy Barnes; as well as aunts and uncles.
