Herman “Leon” Moore, passed away peacefully surrounded by family at 9:15 a.m. Sunday morning, November 22, 2015, at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, Kansas following a lengthy illness. Leon was born in Milburn, Oklahoma on January 15, 1944, the second of five children born to Pauline Ingram and Otis B. Moore. As a small child the family traveled between Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas, following the oil fields, but claimed Texas as their home base.
Leon joined the Army in 1959; serving with the 1st Calvary Air Assault on the DMZ of Korean where his unit was routinely attacked by marauding North Korean soldiers; the 82nd Airborne for the 66 Tet Offensive; and with the 101st Airborne’s “Screaming Eagles,” guarding infiltration routes on the Laotian border – some of the bloodiest battles of the war – where, in the rugged, jungle-shrouded mountains along the Laotian border his unit fought a brutal battle and Leon, as the smallest soldier in this unit, was sent into hand-dug tunnels where the enemy retreated.
After serving 7 years in the Army, Leon settled in Texas with his family, moving to Kansas in 1971. After moving to Wichita, Leon worked as a truck driver; lead mechanic at McGill Trucking; Fleet Maintenance Manager at Coke Cola; Fleet Manager for Miller Equipment and Maintenance Supervisor for City of Park City for the last 13 years.
Leon was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter Shelia Ann Moore of El Dorado, and sister Betty Sales-Stumpf of Waxahachie, TX.
Leon is survived by his wife, Carol, of the home; Daughters: Teresa Moore of El Dorado, Kathy Weidler (Bryan) of Andover; and triplets, Brianne, Destiney and Alicia Meredith of Wichita; stepsons: Jeff and Justin Meredith of Wichita, and Jason Meredith of Pomona, MO; brother Gene Moore (Cathy) of San Diego, CA; sisters: Shirley McBain (Leroy) of McKinney, TX and Judy Moore of Dallas; grandchildren: Chris Moore of San Marcus, TX, Devon O’Roke of El Dorado, Savanna and Jack Weidler of Andover, Mya, Alexis and Ian Meredith of Wichita; TJ Thompson of the home and Jason Jr, Tessa and Taylor Meredith of MO; and multiple nieces and 7 nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, Nov 27 at Hillside Funeral Home at East at 935 N. Hillside, Wichita.
