Max Ramon Griffith

Griffith, Max R., age 85, retired Meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service Office, Wichita, Kansas. His parents were Guy and Mary Griffith of Bern, Kansas. He was born on August 20, 1928. Max went to high school at Bern Rural High School and holds a B.S. degree from Troy University, Troy, Alabama graduating Cum Laude. Max was the fourth brother to join the Army Air Corps during WWII and stayed in the Air Force through the Korean War. He received his weather observer-forecaster training in the Air Force. He had isolated weather experience in the Aleutian Islands and Iwo Jima. He served in the Air Force for over 9 years then went to work for the Weather Bureau later called National Weather Service, NOAA. He received his Meteorology training at Oregon State University, Corvallis, OR. Max has been closely associated with field weather operations during his entire career and one of the Pioneers’ and participants during a rapidly developing science of the exploration of technology advances. He has received several outstanding awards for his performance. While stationed at Topeka he met his wife, Margaret Rathert and they were married for 57 years. After he left the Air Force Max worked for the Weather Bureau they were married at the Lutheran Church at Nortonville, KS on April 15, 1956. They have three children and four grandchildren. In 1983 Max retired from the Weather Service and took the Chief Meteorologist position at WARN Weather in Oklahoma. After four years in Oklahoma and 40 years of weather, Max and Margaret moved back to Wichita where he worked the next 11 years part time for Security Title retiring the last time in 2001. Max enjoyed building things and built three of the homes they lived in. He is survived by wife, Margaret; brother, Don of Colorado Springs, CO; his children, Thomas and wife Olga and Douglas Griffith of Wichita; daughter, Deborah and her husband Mark Dillon of Wichita; granddaughters, Janelle and Lindsay Dillon; grandsons, Tyler Dillon and Gabriel Griffith of Wichita. Max was preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Mary Griffith, two sisters, Naydean and Irene; brothers, Vernon, Wayne “Joe’, Rex and Robert. He will be interred at the Resthaven Cemetery, Wichita. Private graveside services with family members only.
