

John grew up in Northfield where his father worked for the First National Bank. He attended Longfellow Elementary School and graduated from Northfield High School in 1962. He was active in basketball, baseball, golf and football. His school nickname was ‘The Golden Toe’. He attended St Olaf College where he joined Air Force ROTC. After college he was stationed at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois as an Aircraft Maintenance Instructor teaching Vietnamese military personnel how to ensure the safety of American Aircraft and soldiers. John met Katherine Edwins while he was waiting to go on Active Duty. The two married in 1967 before moving to Illinois.
After leaving the Air Force John bought an Our Own Hardware store in Northfield and later began a career as an Insurance Agent for Northwestern Mutual Life. John and Katherine raised their three boys in Northfield. John was deeply involved in the community as well as being a member of the Northfield Lions, Rotary and St. Peter’s Lutheran Church. They moved to Apple Valley, MN in 1984 and finally, took the plunge to warmer climes and moved to The Villages, FL in 2004. In Florida, as a lifelong athlete John was finally able to play as much golf as he wanted. In DATE John was inducted into the Northfield High School Hall of Fame for his prolific high school athletic career.
John is survived by his wife Katherine, sons John D. Schumm (Kathy) of St. Augustine, FL; Bryce Schumm (Patricia) of Dayton, OH; and Nathan Schumm (Kara) of Northfield, MN; 7 Grandchildren: Joshua Schumm (Savannah), Kati Jones (Tyler), John T Schumm, Tanner Schumm, Ian Schumm, Hannah Schumm, and Elaine Schumm and 3 Great Grandchildren: Conner Schumm, Logan Schumm and Emerson Jones. Two sisters: Marilyn Schumm Houston of The Villages, FL and Deborah (Steven) Schumm Znameroski of Eagan, MN.
A celebration of life for John will be held Saturday, June 8, 2024 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Dignity Memorial Life Celebration Center, 7134 Powell Road, Wildwood, FL 34785.
